Earth Day is Every Day at The Supplant Company
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, but we are in business of making every day count for sustainability. The Supplant Company is dedicated to sustainability, which means protecting, conserving, and restoring biodiversity on our beautiful planet. It’s essential for the health and longevity of the people and species that live here.
As such, sustainability is at the core of our mission.
We’re Building Sustainable Food Systems
With the discovery and production of sugars from fiber, we are helping to build a more sustainable food system, to support a growing population here on planet Earth. We upcycle agricultural side streams to create an ingredient that gives people an important macronutrient — fiber. Sugars from fiber is prebiotic, has a lower glycemic response than sugar, and has less than half the calories of sugar, making it possible to enjoy more of the foods we all love.
Sugars from fiber also helps produce more food from every harvest. For every ton of corn grown, for example, there’s another ton of useful fiber from the stalks, cobs, and stems, that goes to waste. Some of this material can be ploughed under to help next year’s harvest. However, there’s still a surplus of material. The rest is often burned or used for biofuels — both of which contribute to greenhouse gases.
Agriculture itself contributes as much as 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We think it’s a pretty important area to look at. It’s also important to make the most of every part of every crop, because agricultural expansion — to grow more food — can damage biodiversity and sensitive ecosystems. We see this happening, in particular, with sugarcane agriculture.
By transforming unused agricultural fiber into an ingredient that can replace sugar from sugarcane, we can solve the growing sustainability challenges of food security and global nutrition — at the same time as helping to reduce global greenhouse gases.
We’re Being Recognized for Leadership in Sustainability
Sugars from fiber has earned us a prestigious Earthshot Prize nomination. The Earthshot Prize “is centred around five ‘Earthshots’ – simple but ambitious goals for our planet which, if achieved by 2030, will improve life for us all, for generations to come.” We’re honored to have been nominated for this prestigious global sustainability award.
We’re also proud of the sustainability record of the products we’re making with sugars from fiber. So far, we offer premium chocolate bars, and sustainable chocolate chips, with more to come. Our chocolate bars are certified carbon neutral with Carbon Fund.
Our chocolate bars have also earned the Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly badge. This sustainability certification highlights “products that meet sustainability standards and help preserve the natural world.” You can see our Climate Pledge Friendly Badge when you shop for Supplant chocolate bars on Amazon.
We’re a young company, and we plan to grow. Ensuring sustainability for the health of our planet, and the precious ecosystems that we rely on, is good for business. But more importantly, it’s good for the Earth, and humanity, as a whole.
Happy Earth Day, and Happy Earth, from The Supplant Company.
